Sliding, Hinged or Walk-In? A Practical Wardrobe Design Guide

27 March 2026 · 6 min read · By Ayesha Malik, Interior Designer

A wardrobe is the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom, so it needs to work hard. Here is how we help clients decide.

Sliding wardrobes

Perfect for tight rooms because the doors never swing into the space. Choose full-height mirrors or glossy panels; keep in mind you can only open one section at a time.

Hinged wardrobes

Classic and flexible. Hinged doors give full access to the interior and allow handleless designs with push-to-open mechanisms. Allow at least 600 mm clearance in front.

Walk-in closets

If you have a spare room or alcove, a walk-in closet is the ultimate luxury. Plan a central island with drawers, open shelving along the walls, and LED strips that switch on when the door opens.

Inside matters more than outside

  • Long-hang: 1,600–1,800 mm for dresses and coats.
  • Double-hang: two rails of 900 mm for shirts and trousers.
  • Drawers: 150–250 mm deep for accessories and folded clothes.
  • Shoe pull-outs: tilt-out racks to save space.
  • Loft: reserve top shelves for suitcases and out-of-season items.

Choosing the finish

For a modern look use UV High Gloss or Super Gloss; for warmth choose Tactile, Lamination woodgrain or Veneer & Polish. Mix finishes: for example, a glossy door with timber-look interior shelves.
